2012 U.S. Open Golf: Olympic Club Finally Gets A Bath

It was about time. After two days of heat and sun, The Olympic Club was thirsty. Fairways and greens felt like driveways, starting fast on Thursday and speeding up all the way through the end of the second round on Friday. Left to bake any longer and the course would've been burnt to a crisp.

So USGA executive director Mike Davis showed a little mercy on Saturday morning. On the course, workers were out with hoses, throwing water on fairways while finishing the setup. Not a ton, and certainly not enough to suddenly open the door for a ton of low scores. But a little bit of water goes a long way on a course that's been quicker than an airport runway.

With temperatures expected to be in the 80s on Saturday, odds are the water helps a little in the morning before the course speeds back up again by the time the final pairings go off. It's better than nothing, though, and perhaps the greens will be a little more receptive, inviting players to fire at pins.

Then again, the world's best have been unable to tame The Olympic Club for two days. Throwing a little water on the course is like putting a Band-Aid over a lacerated artery.
