The first sectional qualifiers for the 2012 U.S. Open took place on Monday. One of those sectionals was a 37-golfer event at Emerald Valley Golf Club in Cresswell, Ore. At the end of the day, Casey Martin had earned the right to attend his first U.S. Open since 1998.
Bob Harig at ESPN.com reports that Martin shot back-to-back rounds of 69 at the qualifier to snag one of two spots available for the U.S. Open. Daniel Miernicki and Nick Sherwood tied, so they will have a playoff on Tuesday to determine the other sectional winner.
Martin, who was born with a birth defect in his leg that makes it painful for him to walk, will be able to use a golf cart in the U.S. Open. Martin currently serves as the golf coach for the Oregon Ducks and is looking forward to competing in the second major of his career.

Sectional Qualifiers for the 2012 U.S. Open took place from sea to shining sea on Monday, and a number of familiar names made it through the grueling 36-hole event to earn spots in the Open, to be played at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.
Davis Love III is among the biggest names to have "made the cut" and earned a place in the Open field, shooting 2-under over his two rounds at the Ohio State Scarlet Course and Scioto Country Club in Columbus, Ohio. Dennis Miller got the day's most dramatic putt at that same Scarlet Course, rolling in a long putt on the final hole of his second round to earn a spot by a stroke.
Longtime pro Bob Estes also secured a spot, taking medalist honors at a Sectional Qualifier in Texas. And there may be more drama to come: Casey Martin was making a run at medalist honors in Oregon as of the publication of this post, and the Sectional Qualifier in Germantown, Tenn. was postponed until Tuesday.

Sectional Qualifying for the 2012 U.S. Open has already happened in Japan and England, but it begins in earnest in the United States this Monday, June 4, with 11 sites hosting dozens of golfers who are hoping to qualify for the second major of the year in golf.
Those sites are spread out across 10 states — only Ohio will host more than one Sectional Qualifier on Monday — and include some big names, like Springfield Country Club in Ohio and Lake Merced Golf Club/TPC At Harding Park in California. The event itself will tax the golfers playing in it, with 36 holes of play on the day and only about 60 spots available in the Open field.
Here is a listing of Sectional Qualifying courses, tee times and notable participants. If you're looking for just one site to follow, it's the one at the Scioto Country Club and Ohio State Scarlet Course (many golfers who just finished playing in the 2012 Memorial Tournament made short trips to Columbus) or the Germantown Country Club in Memphis, where players will be getting ready for the 2012 FedEx Championship after playing in Section Qualifying.
