FedEx St. Jude Classic 2012: Dustin Johnson Picks Up Big Win

On Sunday, Dustin Johnson overcame a two-stroke deficit at the beginning of the day to take over the lead and emerge with the win at the 2012 FedEx St. Jude Classic. Johnson finished at 9-under, one stroke better than runner-up John Merrick, at 8-under.

A quartet of golfers finished in third place at 7-under, including Ryan Palmer, who shot 4-under for the day but couldn't quite reach the top of the leaderboard. Rory McIlroy was just 1-under for the day, but was one of four golfers whho came in at 6-under for the tournament. That's a strong showing from him heading into the U.S. Open next week.

This is a big win for Johnson. This is just his sixth career PGA Tour win, as well as the first tournament win for him since August of last year, when he took the top prize at the Barclays. The win pushes him into the top 20 in the FedEx Cup Standings.

FedEx Cup Standings 2012: Dustin Johnson Vaults Into Top 20

Dustin Johnson didn't earn a single FedEx Cup point while he sat out three months with a back injury. After winning the FedEx St. Jude Classic, Johnson ascended into into the Top 20 in the FedEx Cup Standings for 2012.

Johnson jumped 54 spots from No. 72 to No. 18 on the FedEx Cup leaderboard with 898 points in just nine events. That puts him 837 points behind leader Jason Duffner. Luke Donald, Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods are the only golfers above Johnson who have competed in nine or fewer events.

McIlroy moved up two spots after his finish at the St. Jude Classic, but missed a chance to rise even higher when he double-bogeyed 18 on Sunday with the tournament title still in his sights. The Irishman leapfrogged Phil Mickelson and Matt Kuchar to land at No. 6.

FedEx St. Jude Classic 2012: Dustin Johnson Holds Off Rory McIlroy, John Merrick

Dustin Johnson held off John Merrick and Rory McIlroy to win the 2012 FedEx St. Jude Classic. In his second event since returning from back surgery, Johnson shoot a 4-under 66 on Sunday to finish atop the final leaderboard at the U.S. Open tuneup.

John Merrick almost forced a playoff with a near-miracle chip on 18 that lipped out to end his round one stroke out of the lead. It was a much more sudden, if less disastrous, end compared to Rory McIlroy, who effectively ended his chances on 18 when he sent his drive into the water. McIlory double-bogeyed the hole to finish three strokes back.

Johnson started the final round two strokes back, but spent Sunday around the top of the leaderboard and put himself in a good place to claim victory with consecutive birdies on 16 and 17 to end the day.

FedEx St. Jude Classic 2012: Rory McIlroy, Dustin Johnson Battling Atop Leaderboard

Two of the top young stars in the game of golf are jostling for position at the FedEx St. Jude Classic as the final pairings make the turn on Sunday. Tee times were pushed up at TPC Southwind with thunderstorms expected in the afternoon in the Memphis area. PGA Tour Officials sent threesomes off both tees to try and squeeze in the final round before the inclement weather hits, and the game's biggest stars get antsy to catch their flights to San Francisco for the U.S. Open.

Rory McIlroy currently co-leads with Nick O'Hern at 8-under, with Dustin Johnson just one shot back with nine holes to play. McIlroy went out firing 3-under 32 on the front side. It was a bogey free start that featured three birdies. Rory even missed the birdie chance at the par-5 third hole, which he's played at 3-under the past two days. It was an impressive front side for the Northern Irishman who struggled on Saturday but appears to be rounding his game into form in time for a defense of the U.S. Open.

Johnson held the lead with McIlroy and O'Hern until he dropped a shot at the turn on No. 9. The bomb-and-gouger was tied for 19th last week at Muirfield Village, his first tournament since withdrawing from The Masters in April. Johnson has been steady all week, making his move on Saturday and then carding birdies on three of the first seven holds Sunday morning.

There will be plenty of birdie chances coming in as well. Ken Duke, who trails by just one shot, is absolutely on fire and has birdied five of the first six holes on the back side. John Merrick and Ryan Palmer join Duke and Johnson in the quartet just one shot back.

The winner of the tournament the week before the national championship has never converted back-to-back victories. Of course, both McIlroy and Johnson have a history with the U.S. Open, Rory's more pleasant than Dustin's. With some of the brightest young stars in the game playing well, hopefully the weather holds off in Memphis.

FedEx St. Jude Classic 2012: 3-Way Tie Atop Leaderboard, Rory McIlroy 1 Shot Back

Rory McIlroy started Saturday's 2012 FedEx St. Jude Classic third round ahead of the field by one stroke, but he's left himself some work to do on Sunday after a rough day. He shot two-over par, falling to five-under for the tournament. He's one shot back of the three leaders, Nick O'Hearn, Davis Love III and John Merrick.

O'Hearn had a big day, shooting three-under par to move to the top of the leaderboard. Also shooting three-under on the day was big hitter Dustin Johnson, who joins McIlroy at five-under par. Robert Allenby, Kevin Kisner, Chad Campbell and Kevin Stadler are also sitting at five-under heading into the tournament's final day.

J.B. Holmes is alone at four-under, but there's a massive group of players sitting at three-under par. Expect the final day of the tournament to be tight until the very end.

FedEx St. Jude Classic 2012: Rory McIlroy 1 Shot Back, Dustin Johnson Moves Into 2nd

The final groups have made the turn during the third round of the FedEx St. Jude Classic and Kevin Stadler has come back to lead the pack as the field compresses at the top of the leaderboard. Stadler enjoyed a three-shot lead early on Saturday but he made the turn with a double bogey on No. 9. He then rinsed one on the challenging par-3 14th hole by going right at the flag and misjudging the wind. His shot came up well short and kicked off a sidehill and into the water. Stadler left the hole with a bogey to fall to 6-under.

Kevin Kisner, J.B. Holmes, and Nick O' Hern are now all tied for the lead with Stadler falling back to 6-under. Despite putting a ball out of bounds and making double bogey at the seventh, Holmes is even on Saturday as he continues his way back from brain surgery at the end of the 2011 season. Rory McIlroy has had a rollercoaster round, carding five bogeys and three birdies. He has dropped to 5-under and has not been particularly sharp with his iron play.

In just his second event since withdrawing from The Masters in April, Dustin Johnson made a charge on Saturday by firing a 3-under 67. The long-hitting Johnson eagled the par-5 third hole and did not card a bogey until his final hole. He held sole possession of second place for a moment but finished his round at 5-under and is currently one shot off the lead.

FedEx St. Jude Classic 2012: Kevin Stadler Makes A Move, Rory McIlroy Drops A Shot

The moving day round at TPC Southwind in Memphis has shaken things up atop the leaderboard of the St. Jude Classic. Kevin Stadler has taken an early lead, converting three birdies in his first six holes to move to 9-under. He is three shots clear of a pack at 6-under and taking advantage of the rest of the top names stalling out on their Saturday front nine.

Stadler drained back-to-back birdies on the par-5 third hole and the par-3 fourth hole, then added another birdie at the par-4 sixth. The son of Craig Stadler, he's been in contention at a number of lesser Tour events but has yet to win on the American circuit.

Rory McIlroy started the day one shot ahead of Stadler and two others, but the Northern Irishman has dropped a shot and fallen back to the grouping tied for second at 6-under. McIlroy could not save par at No. 2 and No. 5, but sandwiched a birdie in between those two bogeys on the par-5 third hole (which he eagled on Friday en route to a 65).

Tied with McIlroy in second are Jeff Maggert and J.B. Holmes, who both have to be ecstatic to be in contention on Saturday. Maggert spends most of his time on the Champions Tour but still has a ton of game and, like Fred Couples, can hang with the bombers on the PGA Tour. Holmes, who has had plenty of success on Tour, continues his march back from brain surgery last fall.

FedEx St. Jude Classic 2012: Rory McIlroy Still On Top, Fredrik Jacobson Making A Big Climb

Rory McIlroy sits at the top of the 2012 FedEx St. Jude classic with a 7-under after the first two rounds of play, but McIlroy doesn't tee off until the afternoon. The closest person on the leaderboard to McIlroy that can catch up before he tees off is Dustin Morris, who's sitting at 3-under after shooting 3-under on the day through six holes of play. William McGirt is right there with Morris on the day, shooting 3-under through six holes.

Fredrik Jacobson has made the biggest move on the leaderboard so far Saturday morning, moving up 28 spots with a 2-under through 11 holes on the day, bringing his tournament total to 1-under. On the opposite end of the spectrum, Jonathan Fly is digging a pretty deep hole with a 5-over through 15 holes on the day, bringing his tournament total to 7-over.

FedEx St. Jude Classic 2012: Rory McIlroy Atop Leaderboard After Round 2

Rory McIlroy shot 5-under Friday to take the lead at the 2012 FedEx St. Jude Classic at 7-under overall. McIlroy was 3-under after just three holes, making eagle on the par 5 hole No. 3. He closed out the day with three birdies in his final five holes after recording back-to-back bogeys on 12 and 13.

Three players are tied for second place just one stroke back from McIlroy. J.B. Holmes moved up 26 spots on the leaderboard after shooting 6-under on the day to finish at 6-under overall. He was poised to potentially take the lead after shooting 6-under on the front nine, but cooled on the back nine with a birdie and a bogey on 15 and 16, respectively. Jeff Maggert (1-under Saturday) and Kevin Stadler (5-under) join Holmes just off the lead.

John Merrick led the tournament along with Maggert at 4-under after Day 1 on Thursday. Merrick shot just 1-under Friday to drop into a fifth-place tie with Chad Campbell and Kevin Kisner, two shots off the lead. Kisner was another big mover on the day, shooting 4-under to jump 13 spots on the leaderboard.

FedEx St. Jude Classic 2012: Jeff Maggert, John Merrick Lead After First Round

The 2012 FedEx St. Jude Classic will serve as little more than a glorified tune-up for most golfers playing in it and next week's 2012 US Open. But that's the recipe for an unlikely winner scoring a triumph in Memphis, and Jeff Maggert and John Merrick would both definitely fit the bill.

Maggert and Merrick each opened with a 4-under 66 on Thursday, and both share the lead after the first round of the Classic. Maggert, who started on the 10th tee, raced out to 6-under with four birdies on his back nine and an eagle on No. 3, then made two bogeys in his final five holes of the day to fall back. Merrick, who is not "The Elephant Man," made six birdies and two bogeys on the day.

Maggert and Merrick hold a one-stroke lead on five players tied at 3-under, including J.J. Henry and Jeff Overton. Rory McIlroy, the defending US Open champion, lurks at 2-under.

FedEx St. Jude Classic 2012: Rory McIlroy Impressive With 1st-Round 68

Rory McIlroy will enter the 2012 U.S. Open next week at Olympic with his game out of sorts, having missed three straight cuts. McIlroy made a late decision to add the St. Jude Classic to his schedule to get some more reps in advance of his title defense in San Francisco. He had a rough go of it last week at Muirfield Village and came to Memphis after shooting a 79 on Friday that left him well beyond the cut line.

Rory had a solid start to his opening round on Thursday at TPC Southwind, going out in a 2-under 33 with a bogey-free first nine. He added two more birdies on his second nine, but came in at 2-under after two bogeys to level out. His opening-round 68 was still one of the best rounds of the morning session, with the wind creating plenty of problems for the first wave on Thursday. While he's currently tied for fifth at 2-under, McIlroy did hit less than half of his fairways and only half of his greens in regulation.

McIlroy's playing partner, Padraig Harrington, shot a matching 68 to tie Rory at 2-under. Thursday's early clubhouse leader is Jeff Maggert. The veteran, who plays on both the Champions Tour and the PGA Tour, fired a 66 to take sole possession of the lead at 4-under.
