Ted Potter Jr. outdueled Troy Kelly in a playoff at the Greenbrier Classic to take the win.

It took three playoff holes to do it, but Ted Potter, Jr. is finally a PGA Tour champion after holding off Troy Kelly in a sudden death playoff at the 2012 Greenbrier Classic.
After both players made par on the first playoff hole, Kelly made a questionable hybrid approach shot into the par-5 No. 17 hole, leaving him in a greenside bunker with a horrible stance. Potter would ultimately chip up to within 5 feet for birdie on the same hole, increasing the pressure on Kelly. After fluffing his bunker shot and following chip, Kelly would make a 25-foot par putt to swing the pressure back to Potter, who missed his birdie effort.
Potter made up for that missed opportunity by shooting a dart into No. 18 -- the third playoff hole -- and sinking that four-foot birdie effort to capture the title. Had he not, tournament officials would have likely delayed the playoff as bad weather had moved over the course.
As the 2012 Greenbrier Classic is coming to a close, Charlie Wi is the current clubhouse leader at 14-under after firing a 5-under 65 in his final round. However, Troy Kelly is still leading the tournament outright at 16-under and currently playing No. 16 on his final nine holes.
Wi, a former winner on the PGA Tour, had previously finished runner-up to Phil Mickelson at February's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, but has played rather average golf leading up to this week. Should his score of 266 hold up to win Sunday, it will be his eighth win as a professional.
Kelly, however, is looking to record his first win on the PGA Tour. After recording an impressive 8-under 62 in Saturday's round, Kelly is currently 4-under on the day and three holes away from his first look at the winner's circle on tour.
In what seems to be more of a back-and-forth tennis match than a golf tournament, Troy Kelly has taken sole possession of the lead over Webb Simpson and Ken Duke in the final round of the 2012 Greenbrier Classic.
Simpson, the defending U.S. Open champion, entered Sunday as the 54-hole leader and is paired with Kelly this afternoon. Over his past two holes Simpson has gone bogey-bogey to fall to 13-under and is now in a tie for third place. Kelly, now at 15-under for the tournament, has four birdies on his round so far coupled with a lone bogey on No. 9 at Greenbrier.
Ken Duke, meanwhile, eagled the par-5 No. 12 hole to pull within one shot of the lead. All players are on their final nine holes of their round as the tournament is nearing its conclusion.
PGA Tour rookie Troy Kelly has been playing sensationally at the Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia, a feat even more impressive considering he's likely on his way to his first career Top 10 finish. Webb Simpson is the No. 5 player in the world, and one of the hottest players on tour. The two are in the final group and have made it through 11 holes dead even, with both at -15. Simpson has played his best on the back nine of The Old White TPC, so it will be interesting to see if Kelly, who's played better on the front, can continue his hot shooting to remain neck and neck.
Daniel Summerhays made a furious charge on Sunday, stroking a six-under 63, and he sits tied with Charlie Beljan in third place, hoping Simpson and Kelly both fall apart so he can leapfrog them for the trophy. Beljan is two strokes back at Hole 12, so he's still very much in contention. Martin Flores, Ted Potter, Jr. and Ken Duke are three strokes back at -12, so they'll need serious help if they want to sniff the trophy.

Troy Kelly has climbed his way up the leaderboard Sunday at the 2012 Greenbrier Classic. He is 2-under after making a birdie on No. 2 and is now tied with Webb Simpson in first place at 14-under overall. Simpson is even through four.
Martin Flores and Charlie Beljan are one stroke back of the leaders at 13-under overall. Flores is off to a very fast start, shooting 4-under through his first seven holes of the day. He made consecutive birdies on hole Nos. 5-7.
John Daly recovered from a double bogey on No. 10 and is now 5-under on the day through 17 holes. He has jumped 23 spots on the leaderboard into a three-way tie for tenth place with Kevin Na and Scott Piercy.

The leaders at the 2012 Greenbrier Classic have yet to tee off Sunday, but there has been some movement near the top of the leaderboard from those with early tee times. John Daly climbed as high as No. 7 overall after shooting 4-under on the front nine. A double-bogey on No. 10 halted his big day, but he still sits in a tie for 28th overall at 7-under.
Kevin Na, meanwhile, has already jumped 18 spots on the leaderboard with a 3-under start through seven holes. He birdied Par 4's on hole Nos. 1, 2 and 4 and now sits in a seven-way tie for eighth place at 9-under.
Webb Simpson still leads the field at 14-under for the tournament. He is set to tee off at 1:50 p.m. with Troy Kelly, who is two shots back.

Saturday's third round of play at the 2012 Greenbrier Classic in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., is in the books. At the end of the day, Troy Kelly had a fantastic round, but Webb Simpson was able to overtake him for the lead heading into Sunday's final round.
Kelly shot 8-under for the day to finish at 12-under overall and led the field for most of the day, but Simpson birdied on four of his last six holes to take over sole possession of the lead at 14-under.
Close behind at 11-under are the trio of Ken Duke, J.B. Holmes and Charlie Beljan. Ted Potter Jr. is alone in sixth place at 10-under. The final round will be very interesting, as there are four golfers at 9-under and a total of 11 golfers tied for 11th place at 8-under.

Webb Simpson has moved into a tie for first place during the third round of the Greenbrier Classic on Saturday. Through 14 holes, Simpson is at 12-under, tying him with Troy Kelly, who has finished his third round with a whopping 8-under for the day.
J.B. Holmes and Ken Duke are hot on their heels, at 11-under. Ted Potter Jr. and Charlie Beljan and Ken Duke are in a tie for fifth place at 10-under and are both well within striking distance.
The competition should be interesting and tight through the third and fourth rounds, as four golfers are at 9-under and no fewer than nine different players are well within reach at 8-under in the third round.

Troy Kelly, ranked No. 225 on the PGA Tour Money List this year, is your current clubhouse leader of the Greenbrier Classic, but the U.S. Open champion and others remain in contention.
Through 54 holes, Kelly is 12-under after shooting an 8-under 62 Saturday afternoon, which included eight birdies and zero bogies.
In 15 PGA Tour events this season, Kelly has made only six cuts and finished no higher than 37th. Tomorrow, he will be front and center playing for the first Tour victory of his career.
Webb Simpson, the leader after 36-holes, has continued his steady play into the weekend, as he's currently one under par for the day through 11 holes. Simpson is tied for second with Ted Potter Jr., Ken Duke and Charlie Beljan at 10-under, all who are through either the 11th or 12th hole.

With no Tiger or Phil, the relatively unknown Troy Kelly continues to lead the Greenbrier Classic on moving day.
After shooting a 5-under 29 on the front nine of his round Saturday, Kelly has maintained the top spot on the leaderboard, as he's now six under on the day through 14 holes, and -10 for the tournament.
He has no bogeys on the day.
With many of the leaders entering today's round still not yet through the turn, Kelly's final score of the day will likely be challenged, as Jerry Kelly and J.B. Holmes are already two under through just seven holes of play, and are tied for second place at -9.
U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson, the leader through two rounds, has parred all five of his first holes of the day and remains at nine under par.
While Kelly's torrid pace through the first 14 holes gives him the best round of the day so far, Blake Adams has jumped 31 spots up the leaderboard, as he's 5-under par through 12 holes.
Jeff Maggert, who was second behind Simpson entering the third round of play, has fallen well off the lead with two bogeys and one double bogey through his first six holes of the day.

Webb Simpson, who has had a spectacular run of golf recently, was ahead of the field after two rounds by a stroke, but Troy Kelly, a rookie who has never finished in the Top 3 of a PGA Tour event, has played the front nine of the Greenbrier Classic at The Old White TPC about as well as possible, with five birdies through his first eight holes. He's tied with Simpson at -9 atop the leaderboard. Simpson just teed off, but hasn't finished the first holes yet.
Other movers and shakers from the early tee times are Australian Gavin Coles, who's at three-under through five holes and -7 for the tournament, and Steve Stricker, three shots back at -6 after firing two birdies in his first seven holes. Vijay Singh, who fell off a cliff in the second round with a four-over 74 after a 63 in Round 1, is back to hitting greens and is now five-under for the tournament, four shots back of the lead.

The Greenbrier Classic continues Saturday with a couple of notable names missing. Both Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson missed the cut, making it the first time since 1993 both missed the cut in the same tournament.
Play was suspended due to darkness Friday night with 12 players still needing to complete their second rounds. Those players will take to the course beginning at 8:30 a.m. Saturday with the third round beginning after the second round is complete.
Webb Simpson currently leads heading into the third round at 9-under par. He shot a 4-under 66 on Friday. Charlie Beljan used an 8-under 62 on Friday to propel himself into a second-place tie. Martin Flores wasn't able to complete his second round, but currently sits at 8-under with two holes to play.
Television coverage of Saturday's action will begin at 3 p.m. ET on CBS.

Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson will have plenty of time to practice for the British Open after missing the cut at the Greenbrier Classic.

Tiger Woods' missed cut may be the primary storyline after Friday at the 2012 Greenbrier Classic, but the leader has made his share of headlines of late, too. 2012 U.S. Open winner Webb Simpson used a late birdie to take the lead heading into the weekend.
Simpson finished his 4-under 66 with a birdie on the 18th hole that propelled him to 9-under for the tournament, one shot clear of five golfers tied for second at 8-under, including first-round leaders Jonathan Byrd, Jeff Maggert and Charlie Beljan, who fired an 8-under 62 on Friday.
Simpson made four birdies and no bogeys in his round, giving him 10 birdies to one bogey for the week on The Old White TPC course.

Noted golf enthusiast Tiger Woods was making his first appearance at the 2012 Greenbrier Classic, but it was a short lived debut. Woods was three strokes back of the cut line with four holes left and fell a stroke short, finishing up even after two days of play and getting bounced early.
Joining Woods in getting cut was Phil Mickelson, marking a pretty significant cut for the two golfers. This is the first time both Mickelson and Woods have missed the cut in the same tournament in nearly 20 years. It also marks the third time Woods has missed a cut following a victory in his career, and only the ninth missed cut of his career.
If Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson both miss cut, it will be 2nd time both missed cut in same tournament (1993 Byron Nelson, Tiger was amateur)
— ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) July 7, 2012
Some other notable golfers missing the cut include Jim Furyk, Stuart Appleby and Rory Sabbatini.

After the second day of the 2012 Greenbrier Classic, Tiger Woods is in danger of missing the cut to make it to the Saturday round of golf. Woods, who's making his first appearance in the young tournament, is sitting at 2-over for the week and three shots away from making the cut.
Woods missed a birdie on hole No. 9 after play resumed after a 90-minute weather delay. Woods then bogeyed the next two holes and picked up a birdie on hole No. 12. Tiger still has four more holes to play, but is going to have to hunker down in the final stretch of his back nine to get to the cut line.
If Tiger can't, it's going to be a short debut in West Virginia.

Storm clouds have rolled into West Virginia causing play to be suspended at the 2012 Greenbrier Classic with many of the afternoon player groups still on the course.
Among those players is Tiger Woods, who is struggling to remain above the cut-line and is still even-par for his round, 1-over par for the tournament. Woods was coming off a birdie on No. 7 and was playing his ninth hole of the day before tournament officials suspended play.
J.B. Holmes, Webb Simpson and Jeff Maggert are also playing their second round this afternoon and have reached 7-under par, one shot behind leaders Jonathan Byrd and Charlie Beljan (8-under). Both Holmes and Maggert are on their back nine while Simpson -- playing alongside Woods -- has yet to finish his front nine holes.

As the second round of the 2012 Greenbrier Classic has now entered the afternoon groupings, Jonathan Byrd and Charlie Beljan are sitting comfortably in the lead at 8-under after completing their morning rounds.
Byrd began his second round with a birdie on the par-4 opening hole and another on no. 7 to put pressure on first-round leader Vijay Singh. Byrd would then fall back slightly after three bogies in his next four holes, but bounced back with another birdie on No. 12. He would record two additional birdies on holes 15 and 18 en route to a 2-under 68 in his second round.
Beljan may have had the round of the tournament after firing a scorching 8-under 62 on Friday, catapulting himself into a tie with Byrd on top of the leaderboard. His round included nine birdies in total with his only bogey coming at the par-4 no. 9 hole.

Sometimes a player simply doesn't like a certain golf course. Or maybe the golf course doesn't like a certain player?
In the case of Phil Mickelson and The Greenbrier, either scenario might be true. Mickelson finished his second round in the 2012 Greenbrier Classic at 2-over par for the tournament, which leaves him toward the bottom of the leaderboard. His two-day total also puts Mickelson at risk for missing his second consecutive cut at this tournament.
With the tournament leaders inching closer to the 10-under par mark, Mickelson's chances at playing this weekend become that much less likely throughout the afternoon. Another big-name player also has his work cut out for him to stay above the cut-line: Tiger Woods.
Currently playing his front-nine, Woods begins his second round at 1-over par and just one shot clear of Mickelson at this point.

Veteran Tour pro Vijay Singh holds a one-shot lead after the first round of the 2012 Greenbrier Classic. Singh went low on Thursday, firing a 63 to come in at 7-under. The Old White Course at The Greenbrier is known for yielding some low scores, most notably Stuart Appelby's 59 in a Sunday final round during the inaugural 2010 event. While Jim Justice and the Tour have toughened it up since then, the classic layout is still susceptible to plenty of red numbers. On Thursday, it was Singh who took advantage with six birdies on the back side for an inward 30.
One shot back of Singh is the trio of Jeff Maggert, Martin Flores, and Jonathan Byrd at 6-under. Maggert spends his time on both the Champions Tour and PGA Tour and has experienced success on both circuits this season. He made plenty of noise in Memphis at the FedEx St. Jude Classic and his 64 on Thursday sets him up for a potential weekend run. Byrd remains one of the top American golfers and is consistently on the first page of leaderboards. But he's still looking for a win after his hot start to the 2011 season, with his last win coming at Kapalua.
U.S. Open Champion Webb Simpson is two shots off the lead at 5-under. Simpson spent last week back home with his pregnant wife but he's back out on Tour and playing with Tiger Woods in West Virginia this week. Woods shot an underwhelming 71 on Thursday, struggling with the flatstick. Phil Mickelson matched Woods with a 1-over 71 but Lefty was wild off the tee, hitting a spectator in the head at one point during his mediocre opening round.

Poor putting puts Tiger Woods back in the pack at Sam Snead's old stomping grounds.

After firing an impressive 7-under-par 63 for his opening round of the 2012 Greenbrier Classic, PGA Tour veteran Vijay Singh in your first-round leader in the clubhouse.
Singh was on fire during his back nine, recording six birdies -- including each of his final four holes of the day -- to record a 30 heading into the clubhouse. His round was also complemented by a birdie on Greenbrier's opening hole and yet another on No. 7. An unsightly bogey on No. 4 would be the only blemish on Singh's round.
Meanwhile, FedEx Cup point-leader Tiger Woods continued to struggle in his opening round and finished the round at 1-over par. Playing partner and U.S. Open champ Webb Simpson finished the round at 5-under par, two shots back of Singh.
You know that consistency Tiger Woods talks so much about? Well, despite hitting six of seven fairways and seven of nine greens on his outgoing nine in Thursday's first round of the Greenbrier Classic, Woods made the turn at 1-over, thanks to some truly inconsistent putting.
After rinsing his tee shot in a water hazard to the right on the par-5 17, Woods blew a two-footer for bogey, which had one wondering if his college roommate and new putting guru, Notah Begay, was anywhere on site for a quick tune-up. Woods, who missed a seven-foot putt for birdie on 18, began his round with birdies on Nos. 11 and 12, but dropped a shot with a bogey on the par-4 13th at The Old White TPC in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.
Then came the 17th and a nasty double bogey.
With a birdie on the par-4 first to start his back nine, Woods may have conjured up the advice Begay gave him prior to last week's win at the AT&T National.
As Woods noted on his website on Tuesday, Begay suggested Woods open the toe of the putter on the back stroke to fight his tendency to bring the putter head "too far inside" on his take-away.
"[Begay] made me think back to some of the things I used to think about in college and how I told him how to putt," Woods told reporters at a Tuesday press conference. "He said, ‘you might want to go back to that.' I did and I putted pretty good."
Woods made every putt within 10 feet last week at Congressional Country Club but some ragged putting to start his first Greenbrier Classic outing required 18 putts in just nine holes. With much golf left to play, Woods was even-par through 10 -- five shots back of early leaders Jeff Maggert and Andres Romero.
The opening round of the 2012 Greenbrier Classic in West Virginia is in full swing Thursday, and PGA Tour veteran Jeff Maggert maintains his one-shot lead over the field at 4-under par.
Despite starting the day on a hot note with two birdies in his first three holes, Tiger Woods has fallen back to 1-over par for the tournament after recording a double-bogey on No. 17 at Greenbrier and his eighth hole of the day. His two playing partners -- Steve Stricker and U.S. Open champ Webb Simpson -- are singing a different tune, however, as they are now 3-under par for the tournament and one-shot behind Maggert.
Simpson has four birdies on the day already and would be tied for the tournament lead had it not been for a bogey on his sixth hole of the day at No. 15. Stricker has remained steady throughout his front-nine, recording three birdies and five par's thusfar.
Playing in West Virginia for the first time as a professional, Tiger Woods has birdied two of his first three holes at The Greenbrier Classic to pull within one-shot of the lead in his opening round.
Woods, who won last week's AT&T National, currently leads the PGA Tour with three wins and is hoping to record back-to-back tournament wins for the first time in almost five years. While this is his first trip to The Greenbrier, Woods' first few tournament holes show no indication that his lack of course familiarity will play much of a role this week.
Jeff Maggert is the current first-round leader at 3-under par after 5 holes, a mere shot ahead of Woods and four other players at 2-under. Tiger's playing partners for the day -- Steve Stricker and Webb Simpson -- are currently tied at 1-under and in seventh place.
When the Greenbrier Classic 2012 kicks off on Thursday, the third-year tournament will have Tiger Woods in the field of golfers. This will be his first year at the Old White TPC in White Sulphur Springs, WV. The par-70 course has seen Stuart Appleby and Scott Stallings win the first two years of the tournament, but a victory by Woods here would certainly bring the event more awareness.
Woods will be paired with 2012 U.S. Open winner Webb Simpson and Steve Stricker. First-round coverage of the Greenbrier can be seen on the Golf Channel from 3:00-7:00 p.m. ET. Sirius XM Radio will begin its coverage at 1:00 p.m. ET and continue until 7:00 p.m.

Since winning last week's AT&T National, Tiger Woods has made a couple of oblique references to a mysterious putting tip from his former Stanford teammate Notah Begay III that helped him regain his touch on the greens. Tuesday, Woods offered additional details on the assistance Begay offered.
Begay saw that Woods was "bringing the putter head too far inside on his back stroke," Woods' website editor Mark Soltau wrote on tigerwoods.com Tuesday. The motion, Soltau noted, caused Woods to block putts to the right.
As an antidote, Begay suggested that his old college roommate open the toe of the blade on the back stroke, forcing it outside. That's how Woods used the flat stick in college, Soltau said, backing up comments Woods made earlier in the day during his pre-Greenbrier Classic press conference.
"[Begay] made me think back to some of the things I used to think about in college and how I told him how to putt," Woods told reporters at the press conference. "He said, ‘you might want to go back to that. I did and I putted pretty good."
Indeed he did, as Woods made every putt inside 10 feet that he faced at Congressional Country Club, and he had no three-putts. He also drained one long putt last week, a 48-footer for eagle on the 16th hole on Friday.
Tiger Woods talks Sam Snead, Notah Begay and, oh yeah, his swing changes.
