Greenbrier Classic 2012: Troy Kelly Jumps Into Lead With Stellar Front 9

Stay connected with SB Nation

Webb Simpson, who has had a spectacular run of golf recently, was ahead of the field after two rounds by a stroke, but Troy Kelly, a rookie who has never finished in the Top 3 of a PGA Tour event, has played the front nine of the Greenbrier Classic at The Old White TPC about as well as possible, with five birdies through his first eight holes. He's tied with Simpson at -9 atop the leaderboard. Simpson just teed off, but hasn't finished the first holes yet.

Other movers and shakers from the early tee times are Australian Gavin Coles, who's at three-under through five holes and -7 for the tournament, and Steve Stricker, three shots back at -6 after firing two birdies in his first seven holes. Vijay Singh, who fell off a cliff in the second round with a four-over 74 after a 63 in Round 1, is back to hitting greens and is now five-under for the tournament, four shots back of the lead.
