Greenbrier Classic 2012: Hairy Win For Ted Potter, Jr.

Stay connected with SB Nation

It took three playoff holes to do it, but Ted Potter, Jr. is finally a PGA Tour champion after holding off Troy Kelly in a sudden death playoff at the 2012 Greenbrier Classic.

After both players made par on the first playoff hole, Kelly made a questionable hybrid approach shot into the par-5 No. 17 hole, leaving him in a greenside bunker with a horrible stance. Potter would ultimately chip up to within 5 feet for birdie on the same hole, increasing the pressure on Kelly. After fluffing his bunker shot and following chip, Kelly would make a 25-foot par putt to swing the pressure back to Potter, who missed his birdie effort.

Potter made up for that missed opportunity by shooting a dart into No. 18 -- the third playoff hole -- and sinking that four-foot birdie effort to capture the title. Had he not, tournament officials would have likely delayed the playoff as bad weather had moved over the course.
