First-round action at the 2012 Wyndham Championship has concluded, with several golfers having distinguished themselves from the rest of the pack.
Carl Pettersson of Sweden led the way with birdies on four straight holes at 5, 6, 7, and 8. He then birdied 11 and 12, before capping off his round with birdies on 16 and 18 to finish with eight birdies and no bogeys. After that sensational opening 18, Petterson is your clubhouse leader at 8-under.
Just one shot behind him is David Mathis, who was nearly as perfect as Pettersson, posting seven birdies without carding a single bogey. Mathis birdied Nos. 2, 5, 8 and 9, and then went on a run of three straight birdies from 13 to 15.
Tim Clark is tied with Mathis at 7-under, thanks to an eagle on the fourth and birdies on Nos. 9, 12, 15, 16 and 17. The top three players combined for 20 birdies, one eagle and zero bogeys on Thursday.
Right behind those three are Tom Gillis, Scott Stallings and Troy Matteson, all of whom are tied for fourth place at 6-under after shooting opening-round scores of 64. Matt Every is right behind them in seventh place at 5-under.
