The first event of the FedEx Cup Playoffs is underway, as golf has commenced at Bethpage Black. The tournament includes the eagerly anticipated pairing of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy.
The very early leader, for those curious, is a tie between Pat Perez -- who got birdies on each of his first three holes --- and Troy Matteson, who is also at 3-under through four holes. Meanwhile, Rory Sabbatini is headed in the opposite direction, already at 3-over par, which isn't exactly a good start.
The McIlroy-Woods pairing, which teed off at 8:16 a.m., will be a particularly fun one: Woods, as you might know, is a noted golf enthusiast, and despite his poor play in majors, leads the FedEx Cup points standings after having won three tournaments in 2012. Meanwhile McIlroy is the world's No. 1 golfer and third on the points list after his PGA Championship win. They're golfing today with Zach Johnson, who is fourth with a pair of tournament victories on the season. Nothing much has happened with the threesome just yet -- Johnson bogeyed his first hole, if you must know -- but the golf world will certainly be keeping an eye on them over the next two days.
