BMW Championship 2012: Phil Mickelson Takes 1-Shot Lead, Rory McIlroy Keeps Pace

Phil Mickelson has taken a one-shot lead early during Sunday's final round of the 2012 BMW Championship. Mickelson picked up a birdie on the par-4 second hole to move to 17-under for the championship, one shot ahead of playing partner Vijay Singh, Rory McIlroy, and Robert Garrigus. Mickelson shot up the leaderboard with a moving-day Saturday round of 64 and he's looking to capitalize on that with a win Sunday that would put him in a prime spot for the $10 million FedExCup final in Atlanta.

Rory McIlroy, who it seems has been on the first page of leaderboards for a month now, is keeping pace with Phil by also carding a birdie on the second hole. He's at 16-under and looking to go back-to-back, a win that would put a stranglehold on the overall standings.

Soft course conditions typically favor the longer hitters, like Garrigus and Bubba Watson. The 2012 Masters winner is playing lights-out, moving 30 spots up the board at 8-under through his first 16 holes. Garrigus is 2-under through his first five holes. Tiger Woods, meanwhile, has stalled out and is even through his first six holes. It's looking like another strong, but winless week for Woods.

The Tour has put lift, clean, and place in effect again on Sunday, which means there will be plenty of birdies on what could be a wild stretch to the third leg of the FedExCup. The soft course will ensure there's plenty of jostling on the first page of the leaderboard.
