Rory McIlroy will shock the world on Monday when he and his new supplier of all things golf make that "major announcement" that the world No. 1 has signed a blockbuster deal with an equipment maker out of Beaverton, Ore. So it’s hardly a bombshell that McIlroy is practicing with Nike clubs as he prepares for his 2013 season-opener in Abu Dhabi.
What may be somewhat surprising, however, was Golf Central Daily’s recent report that McIlroy may still be navigating the greens with his old reliable Titleist Scotty Cameron Studio Select Newport GSS Prototype putter. At least, "a passerby" took a photo of Rory’s bag, in which a Scotty C head cover resided, according to GCD, which noted that a Nike Method putter also shared space in the two-time major champ’s satchel.
Nike may have agreed to let McIlroy use his familiar putter, as Tiger Woods did after switching over from Titleist. Let’s just hope Rory’s caddie remembers to yank one of the 15 clubs from his practice bag before they hit the links for real.
GCD reported that McIlroy will apparently put into play Nike’s new Covert driver; VR II Pro blades; a 3- and 5-wood; a Pro Combo cavity back long iron; and 46-, 50- and 54-degree, "Rors"-stamped wedges.
