While most of the golf world had their eyes fixed on Torrey Pines on Sunday night, the USGA sent out a tweet saying they would have a special Monday morning announcement from Winged Foot. The subject of the announcement was clear, and on Monday, the news became official that the Westchester County layout would hold the national championship in 2020.
Winged Foot's West Course is firmly entrenched in the USGA's rota, as it last held the U.S. Open in 2006. Tom O'Toole articulated the organization's affinity for the layout during the announcement:
"Winged Foot offers a spectacular setting in a dynamic market, and has justifiably earned its reputation as one of the premier U.S. Open venues in the nation. And it joins an impressive lineup of future U.S. Open Championship locations that players and fans alike can eagerly anticipate."
It was a memorable finish the last time the season's second major stopped at Winged Foot. The 2006 U.S. Open was the site of Phil Mickelson's 18th-hole collapse, and Geoff Ogilvy''s improbable win. It was the fourth time Mickelson came in second at the event. He'd finish in that same spot for a fifth time three years later at Bethpage Black, his fourth second-place finish at New York area venues. In 2020, Mickelson will be 50-years-old and likely at the end of his career.
This will be the sixth time that Winged Foot has hosted the Open, and the challenge of the West Course, along with the ample room on the grounds of the club, certainly make it an ideal location. The USGA went outside the typical rota this season when it selected Merion, one of the top courses in the world, but a shorter and more classic layout confined in the Philly area. With Winged Foot now in the fold, here are the venues for the U.S. Open through 2020:
2013 -- Merion Golf Club, East Course - Ardmore, Pennsylvania
2014 -- Pinehurst Resort, Course #2 - Pinehurst, North Carolina
2015 -- Chambers Bay - University Place, Washington
2016 -- Oakmont Country Club - Oakmont, Pennsylvania
2017 -- Erin Hills - Erin, Wisconsin
2018 -- Shinnecock Hills Golf Club - Shinnecock Hills, New York
2019 -- Pebble Beach Golf Links - Pebble Beach, California
2020 -- Winged Foot, West Course - Mamaroneck, New York
