The Presidents Cup scores: International team attempts comeback after weather delay

Brian Spurlock-USA TODAY Sports

It's no longer a shutout at Muirfield Village, but the Internationals still have a lot of work to do to avoid a big opening day deficit.

After a storm delay that lasted almost 90 minutes, the International side is back on the course and attempting to mitigate the damage from an early whitewash at the Presidents Cup. The Internationals took a 1-up lead on the first hole in the first match of the day, but it was the only International lead of all the six matches and it lasted just one hole.

The board was all red through a majority of the first two hours of Four-ball, but Charl Schwartzel and Louis Oosthuizen did get things all square against Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley before the horn sounded. But still, there was no International lead on the board.

The delay came at a good time, interrupting the American dominance and at least giving the Internationals a chance to regroup and try to avoid a 6-0 disaster in the first session of the competition. Schwartzel and Oosthuizen, a South African duo who've played together since childhood, were a bit of a wild card given that Oosty has not played since early July, nursing neck, back and hip injuries. But as all the matches hit the back side at Muirfield Village, they're the only pairing on the board with a lead, jumping on top of that fantastic Ryder Cup duo of Bradley-Mickelson.

Adam Scott and Hideki Matsuyama also tried to get a bit of momentum on the International side, pulling their match all square. But the Wake Forest duo of Bill Haas and Webb Simpson immediately took back their 1-up cushion on the very next hole, No. 12. Jason Day and Graham DeLaet, playing in an all important leadoff match that the Internationals had to have, are coming back a bit on Hunter Mahan and Brandt Snedeker. Day and DeLaet were 3-down through six holes, but have cut the deficit to one with five holes to play.

Here's a snapshot of the match board with everyone now on the back nine:
