Northern Trust Open 2013 purse: John Merrick, Charlie Beljan big winners at Riviera

Harry How

It was the first career win for John Merrick, who earned almost $1.2 million by winning his hometown event at Riviera.

John Merrick picked up his first PGA Tour career win on Sunday at Riviera, and it was also his first seven-figure payday. Merrick has certainly earned plenty of cash during a career with several top five finishes, but his win at the Northern Trust Open in his hometown of Los Angeles was by far the biggest check he's collected to date.

Merrick needed two playoff holes to beat out Charlie Beljan, who was going for his second win in the past four months. Merrick, an LA native and UCLA alum, was tearful on the 18th green as he was being interviewed by David Feherty of CBS. It was a Sunday full of career highlights, capped by a nearly $1.2 million payout. Beljan's playoff loss secured him a solo second finish, and more than 700k of the total $6.6 million purse. Here are the earnings for the top 10 finishers:

1 - John Merrick -- $1,188,000
2 - Charlie Beljan -- $712,800
T3 - Fredrik Jacobson -- $343,200
T3 - Bill Haas -- $343,200
T3 - Charl Schwartzel -- $343,200
T6 - Josh Teater -- $229,350
T6 - Webb Simpson -- $229,350
T8 - Sang-Moon Bae -- $198,000
T8 - Hunter Mahan -- $198,000
T10 - Greg Chalmers -- $165,000
T10 - Ted Potter, Jr. -- $165,000
T10 - Adam Scott -- $165,000
