Bunker Rake: John Merrick Spoils the Fun

Harry How

Distracted too much by the NBA All-Star weekend? Here's what you may have missed in golf news from last week.

First-time winners on the PGA Tour always give me a warm feeling inside. US Presidents playing golf with legends has a similar effect, although that might be the pot roast I ate yesterday afternoon. Check out this week's Bunker Rake while I search for some Tums.

John Merrick Bit Charlie -- Remember that YouTube video where the two brothers are sitting on a chair and the younger (Charlie) chomps down on his older brother's finger? I've only watched it 100 times in my life and am now horrified by English children.

Yesterday, one Charlie got his one-uppence at the Northern Trust Open as John Merrick captured his first victory in a playoff over Charlie Beljan. You can't help but worry about good ol' Charlie considering his panic edginess, although he appeared to have his thoughts under control on Sunday, at least for a little while. Merrick appeared to leap-frog over his competition throughout the day on a course he's reportedly played hundreds of times. Poor Charlie never had a chance.

President Obama Plays Golf With Tiger -- What better way to celebrate your President's Day than by playing golf with arguably the best player of all time? President Barry Obama and Tiger Woods hit the links Sunday afternoon for the first time together, originally with the plan to play 27 holes. Now there's talk that the duo only survived 18.

Have you seen Obama's golf swing? While by no means the worst Presidential swing in history, it is eerily close to chopping wood while standing on a life raft. The fact Obama swings from the left only makes the whole thing that much more hilarious. I'm going to assume Tiger couldn't take much more of the day after the 18th green.
