With two players shooting a 5-under 67 in Round 1 of the Valero Texas Open, Matt Bettencourt and Peter Tomasulo find themselves leading the field heading into Friday's action. Bettencourt made six birdies and hit 12 greens in regulation in the opening round, while Tomasulo made a late surge and birdied the final hole to tie things up.
Bettencourt's last win came in 2010 at the Reno-Tahoe Open. He hasn't exactly been in the best shape over the years, though. Hindered by asthma, the 37-year-old didn't appear affected by the condition on Thursday at TPC San Antonio.
Tomasulo is still searching for his first PGA Tour title. He's captured three Web.com wins in his career, but his time at the top level has been brief. He and Bettencourt hold one-stroke leads over four other players.
Padraig Harrington, Billy Horschel, Bryce Molder, and Harris English all shot 4-under to start off. Ten players sit right behind them at 3-under.
Rory McIlroy finished with an even 72. The second-ranked player in the world is still trying to battle back to No. 1 overall after being replaced by Tiger Woods in March. He'll have a chance to move up again at The Masters next weekend.
