U.S. Open golf 2013 leaderboard: Phil Mickelson leads at 2-under

Eileen Blass-USA TODAY

Phil Mickelson is leading the U.S. Open, despite flying across the country overnight.

Phil Mickelson's cross-country redeye flight doesn't seem to be impacting his play in the first round of the U.S. Open as he's taken over the lead at 2-under.

Mickelson opened the round with a bogey, but quickly rebounded with a birdie two holes later. After five pars to close his back nine, Mickelson birdied No. 1 to move into the red. After another stretch of five straight pars, Mickelson made a short birdie putt at No. 7 to take over the lead.

Despite rain and predictions of record-low scoring, Merion Golf Club is proving to be quite the challenge in the early going on Thursday. Birdies were abundant early, but players have struggled to stay in the red since with seven players currently under par.

George Coetzee and Tim Clark were tied for the lead at 2-under but after both ran into trouble, there is currently a six-way tie for second place at 1-under. Ian Poulter and Mike Weir are among the players one back of the lead. In addition to the lead pack, eight more players are one stroke back. That group includes Rickie Fowler and Hunter Mahan. Fowler made the turn at 2-over, but back-to-back birdies at No. 1 and No. 2 got him back to even par.

Sergio Garcia's first round has been eventful, to say the least. Garcia sits at 5-over through 12 holes, but his scorecard includes an eagle and a quadruple bogey. Through 11 holes, Garcia carded an eagle, two birdies, four pars, three bogeys and double bogey and a quad.

Here's a quick look at a few notable players. A complete live leaderboard is available at USOpen.com.

Score Player Thru
-2 Phil Mickelson 15
