Golf’s longest day: Final 2013 U.S. Open sectional qualifying results

Tom Pennington

Here’s a rundown of the winners and also-rans (with help from the USGA and Golf Channel, which did a tremendous job with its wall-to-wall coverage of “golf’s longest day”):

Brookside G&CC/The Lakes G&CC, Columbus, Ohio (15 slots)

Merion-bound: Charley Hoffman, David Hearn, Nicholas Thompson, Robert Karlsson, Josh Teater, David Lingmerth, Brandt Jobe, Brendan Steele, Aaron Baddeley, Ted Potter Jr., Justin Hicks, Doug LaBelle II, Rory Sabbatini, Sang Moon Bae, Lukas Guthrie

Potter, Baddeley, Hicks, LaBelle, Sabbatini, Bae, and Guthrie make it after surviving an 11-for-7 playoff, that left 2003 Masters champ Mike Weir out of the mix. Weir will be first alternate.

Colonial CC, Memphis, Tenn. (9 slots)

Merion-bound: Kevin Sutherland, Shawn Stefani, Jerry Kelley, Morgan Hoffman, Joe Ogilvie, Scott Langley, Brandon Crick, Alistair Presnell, Andrew Svoboda

Presnell and Svoboda outlasted Scott Stallings in a 3-for-2 playoff.

Hawk’s Ridge GC, Ball Ground, Ga. (3 slots)

Merion-bound: Ryan Nelson and two amateurs, Michael Kim and Grayson Murray

Century CC/Old Oaks CC, Purchase, N.Y. (4 slots)

Merion-bound: Jesse Smith, amateur Gavin Hall, Geoffrey Sisk, and Jim Herman

Herman won his spot after Richard Sterne, who earned an exemption, withdrew.

Woodmont CC, Rockville, Md. (8 spots)

Merion-bound: Russell Knox, Randall Hutchinson, Adam Hadwin, Ryan Sullivan, Matt Harmon, Cliff Kresge, Matthew Goggin, and Matt Bettencourt

Bettencourt prevailed in a 3-for-1 playoff. Early in the day, Lee Janzen earned a DQ for breaching conditions of competition by wearing steel spikes.

Springfield (Ohio) CC (2 slots)

Merion-bound Brian Stuard and Brandon Brown

Big Canyon CC/Newport Beach CC, Newport Beach, Calif. (5 spots)

Merion-bound: Bio Kim, Steven Aiker, Roger Tambellini, Max Homa, Cory McElyea

Old Warson CC, St. Louis, Mo. (2 slots)

Merion-bound: Jay Don Blake, Mackenzie Hughes

At 54, medalist Blake could well be the oldest contender next week. Hughes, who was in the field when Jay Haas withdrew, won his spot in a playoff.

Tumble Creek GC, Cle Elum, Wash. (2 slots)

Merion-bound: Wil Collins, Cheng-Tsung Pan

Only two players broke par on what Tiger Woods’ former Stanford teammate Casey Martin (tied for 21st) called a devilishly difficult track.

Ritz Carlton Members GC, Bradenton, Fla. (3 slots)

Merion-bound: Amateur Kevin Phelan, John Hahn, and John Nieporte

Nieporte finally defeated 15-year-old David Snyder, and amateur, on the third playoff hole on Tuesday morning after play was suspended Monday due to darkness.

Lakewood CC, Dallas, Texas (4 slots)

Merion-bound: Matt Weibring, Edward Loar, Jordan Spieth, Zack Fischer

In another darkness-related Tuesday morning playoff, Fischer beat Palmer on the 12th extra frame.
