Dustin Johnson could not ask for a much better start at the 2013 St. Jude Classic if he hopes to defend his title from last season. Through seven holes, he is already in the lead at 5-under, with an eagle on the par-5 hole No. 3. Johnson leads second-place Nathan Green, who finished his day at 4-under, and six players tied at 3-under.
There is still plenty of golf to go. While the competitors who went off in the morning wave are largely finished, the afternoon wave is just hitting the meat of the course. Still, Johnson will have an impressive opening round if he can keep pace. James Hahn, Russell Henley and Joe Durant are the hottest players on Johnson's tail, all at 3-under through eight, six and four holes, respectively.
Phil Mickelson finished the day a disappointing 1-over. He had an awful three-hole stretch over 15-17, shooting 4-over with a double bogey on No. 16. Brandt Snedeker, the highest-ranked player in the tournament at No. 6 in the current World Golf Rankings, is at 2-under through six holes.
