Phil Mickelson, in flip flops, drops by Callaway with the Claret Jug

USA TODAY Sports

Phil Mickelson dropped in on Callaway to let everyone get some time with the game's most famous trophy.

Phil Mickelson, in black from his golf shirt down to his flip flops, paid a surprise visit on Wednesday to the folks who dress up his golf bag with all those Callaway clubs and passed around his shiny, new British Open trophy.

Needless to say, there was a full house at HQ when Lefty stopped by the Carlsbad, Calif., offices with the Claret Jug. It was a much more casual and relaxed affair for Phil, leading to this wonderful shot of the Cali bro in all his glory:

"I know there's a lot of you," Mickelson said, according to Callaway’s Twitter page, "but I want everyone to hold the jug." It was an unexpected appearance, with a simple morning text to the equipment maker's CEO.

Mickelson, an unabashed Callaway pitchman, used an Odyssey putter to post four birdies in the final six holes of Sunday’s Open Championship finale on his way to a come-from-behind, three-shot victory over Henrik Stenson.

Mickelson, who began the round five shots off the lead, had no driver in his bag last week, switching it out for a Callaway X Hot 3Deep Fairway Wood off the tee and the fairways. He raved about the performance of his clubs, which put him in perfect position to can a birdie putt on the 17th hole.

"Those two 3-woods were the two best shots of the week, to get it on that green," Mickelson said after recording his fifth major title and first British Open win. "As I was walking up to the green, that was when I realized that this is very much my championship in my control."

During the awards ceremony at Muirfield, the 43-year-old from San Diego thanked Callaway technicians for their efforts on his behalf.

Here’s what Mickelson, who chalked up his second win in two weeks after triumphing at the Scottish Open, had in his award-winning bag last week:

Callaway X Hot 3Deep fairway wood, 13-degree

Callaway X forged irons, 4-9, plus PW

Callaway JAWS wedges, 52- and 56-degree

Callaway Mack Daddy 2 wedges, 60- (prototype) and 64-degree

Odyssey Versa #9 putter (white/black/white)

Callaway prototype HEX Chrome+ golf ball

In addition to all the Callaway sticks, Phil also carried a Ping Anser 17-degree hybrid.
