PGA Championship leaderboard 2013: Jason Day making a run, Rory McIlroy drops off

Andrew Redington

As he seems to do at every major, Jason Day is working his way up the leaderboard.

The leaders are beginning to make their way around Oak Hill for the final time, faced with some unexpected pressure as a few players have charged up the leaderboard. Jason Day, on a tear Sunday, now stands just three strokes off the lead at the 2013 PGA Championship.

Day began the day nine strokes off the lead. A bogey at No. 2 dropped him to 1-over and appeared to end his chances of contending. He's caught fire since, with seven birdies on last 10 holes. Day made the turn at 32 and birdied three of his first four holes afterwards. Because he's well ahead of the leaders, he has an opportunity to post a low score and see what happens.

Rory McIlroy entered the round with a chance to make a run like Day, but he's failed to capitalize on a few early opportunities. Beyond a birdie on No. 3, he missed at least two reasonable birdie putts that should have fallen. McIlroy was in prime position for a birdie at No. 4, but his short putt burned the right edge.

Those missed opportunities are already coming back to bite him. His approach shot at No. 6 caught the false front of the green and rolled into the hazard. He had issues getting up and down, eventually carding a triple bogey to move to 1-under and eight strokes off the lead.

Jim Furyk continues to lead at 9-under and is even par through two holes. Jason Dufner is also even through two holes, one stroke behind Furyk. Here is a closer look at the leaderboard.
