PGA Championship: Phil Mickelson cannot get off the tee early at Oak Hill

Andrew Redington

Phil Mickelson is off to a rough start at the PGA Championship.

If Phil Mickelson is going to win back-to-back majors, he may need to get going in a hurry as he's 3-over through four holes.

It's been an erratic start for Lefty who didn't hit a fairway or a green through four holes. He managed to save par on each of the first two holes, but couldn't save par again on No. 3 and dropped to 1-over with a bogey. Mickelson ran into more trouble on No. 4 when he hit his tee shot out of bounds.

Bones marked up the provisional, and Phil promptly reloaded and went right back in the same direction. The second tee shot wasn't much better, but stayed in bounds on the right side of the fence this time.

He came close to salvaging a bogey, but missed the putt and dropped two shots with a seven on the Par 5. It's one of just two par-5s on the course, and one of the best birdie opportunities out there Yet we've seen Tiger card a bogey and Phil finished with a double on Thursday. With several players taking advantage of optimal scoring conditions, Mickelson may need to rebound quickly if he's going to be a factor going forward. He's currently eight strokes off the lead.

Maybe not being able to find the first tee was a bad omen. Here is a look at Mickelson's round.
