There haven't been too many major championship highlights for Martin Kaymer since he won the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in 2010. But on Thursday at Oak Hill, the former No. 1 player in the world went from even-par to 3-under in just two holes on the back nine. At No. 13, Kaymer stood over his third shot in the fairway, 153 yards out on the par-5 and fired right at the flagstick. The result worked out pretty well for the German:
The 13th hole is a true three-shot par-5, measuring around 600 yards but playing much longer. We saw Tiger Woods not even entertain going for the green in two on Thursday morning, instead taking an iron off the tee. It worked out for Tiger, who also stuck a his third shot within a foot of the cup for a tap-in birdie.
But Kaymer did one better than Tiger, making what may be the only eagle on the hole all week. There was not a single eagle on the monster par-5 when the PGA was played here in 2003. With the added rain that's made the greens softer and even more receptive, expect the players to continue going right at the flag as the red numbers stack up at Oak Hill.
