PGA Championship scores 2013: Adam Scott, Jim Furyk tied for the lead

Stuart Franklin

Despite a weather delay, the entire field made it through the first round of the PGA Championship. Jim Furyk and Adam Scott end the day tied for the lead.

The first round of the 2013 PGA Championship is in the books and it was an eventful opening round at Oak Hill. Conditions were prime for scoring, and many players took advantage, including Adam Scott and Jim Furyk, who each shot 65s and are tied for the lead at 5-under.

Overnight rain made for receptive greens and welcoming fairways. Furyk, who played in one of the early groups, opened his round with a birdie and made the turn at 3-under. He moved to 6-under after a birdie on his 16th hole before giving one back on his final hole of the day to post 5-under.

Scott got off to an even better start with five straight birdies from No. 4 to No. 8. His 30 on the front nine had him in position to set a course and possibly major tournament record, but he cooled off on his final nine holes. He was 6-under through 15 before a bogey at No. 16 dropped him back into a share of the lead.

A number of players took advantage of the conditions with 35 players finishing the day under par. That includes Lee Westwood (4-under), Matt Kuchar (3-under), Jason Day (3-under), Justin Rose (2-under) and Rory McIlroy (1-under). McIlroy played much better than he has recently, carding just his second round in the 60s during a major.

Phil Mickelson appeared to be on his way to joining McIlroy at 1-under. He ran into trouble, however, at No. 18. After hitting his tee shot into the woods, Mickelson's second shot caught a tree, forcing him to punch out. He went on to double bogey the hole and finish with a 1-over 71. Mickelson is tied for 50th place and joined by Tiger Woods, who also shot a 71. Like Mickelson, Woods also had issues coming in with a double bogey on his final hole of the day.
