2014 Farmers Insurance Open: Tee times, pairings for Friday's round

Donald Miralle

Tiger Woods needs to take advantage of the easier North Course on Friday during the second round of the Farmers Insurance Open, while Phil Mickelson is hoping a balky back cooperates enough for him to stay in the tournament.

The 2014 Farmers Insurance Opens resumes Friday on the Pacific Coast in La Jolla, where No. 1 in the world Tiger Woods begins the day eight shots off the lead. Woods scuffled through his first round of the new season, an even-par score on Torrey Pines' more difficult South Course.

Tiger will now get the much shorter and easier North Course on Friday, where he's historically feasted on the par-5s. The North Course was playing significantly easier on Thursday, with just one player in the top 10 from the South Course and just three in the top 28. It would be a shock if Tiger doesn't go low, posting a number in the mid-60s to push his way back up the board and into a nice contending position at the midpoint. The final two rounds will be played on the more famous South Course, which he's also owned, but Tiger needs to make up some ground Friday following his lackluster debut.

Woods will be out again with 20-year-old phenom Jordan Spieth and current FedExCup Standings leader Jimmy Walker. Spieth, the 2013 rookie of the year, was a shot better than the 2013 player of the year during the first 18 on Thursday. They will obviously be the marquee group of the second round, and they're set to go off No. 10 at 12:30 p.m. ET. Golf Channel comes on the air at 3 p.m. ET, with some highlights during a half-hour pre game show before that, so most of Tiger's back nine should be televised Friday afternoon.

The marquee group on the South Course will be headlined by San Diego native and resident Phil Mickelson, who ironically reiterated his contempt for the Rees Jones inspired redesign of the layout. Mickelson has not played well on the most renowned course in his backyard since it was redone over a decade ago, and he termed the setup "monotonous" just this week. In addition to his animosity for the course, Phil is now dealing with a tweaked back that brought the potential for a withdrawal into the discussion Thursday night.

Mickelson will obviously wake up and give it go, trying to get loose. But it wouldn't be a surprise if he did WD at this early season event on a course he's not really fond of. We'll wait and see Friday morning. He's currently scheduled to go out with Bubba Watson and Jason Day off No. 1 South.

Here's the full tee sheet for both courses during Friday's second round (all times ET).
