2014 Valspar Championship: Robert Garrigus jumps into the 36-hole lead

Sam Greenwood

The low round of the day helped Robert Garrigus take over the lead at the Valspar Championship.

SB Nation's GIF Tournament V

Although Innisbrook proved to be a difficult challenge for most of the field on Friday, Robert Garrigus had no such issues. Garrigus carded the low round of the day, shooting a 5-under 66 to vault into the lead. At 7-under, he holds a three-stoke lead over the field, with only five other players within four strokes.

Garrigus is one of the longer hitters on tour and he took advantage of that length during the second round. He opened the round with a birdie on the par-5 first hole. He went on to birdie all four par-5s, accomplishing that feat for the second straight day. He added one birdie on a par-4 and another on a par-3 to give him six on the day. His only dropped shot came on No. 10 when he missed an 11-foot putt to save par. His round of 66 was two strokes better than the second-best score in the round.

Kevin Na will head to the weekend in second place at 4-under. He used a 3-under 68 to jump 10 spots up the leaderboard. Pat Perez, Justin Rose, Matt Every and Matteo Manassero are all tied for third at 3-under. Rose also carded a 68, despite a pair of dropped shots in his final four holes.

Friday wasn't as kind to all as it was to Rose, Na and Garrigus. John Daly shot a round of 90, yes 90, the worst score of his PGA Tour career. Not much went well for Daly in the round -- he needed 37 putts -- but the worst came on No. 16 where he carded a 12 on the par-4. While he struggled with the flatstick during the round and talked about having the yips after, the issues on the 16th started off the tee. He hit his tee shot into the water and the drop left him needing a long carry over a lake. He was unable to carry the water on his first two attempts, eventually hitting a ball well to the left. He said he shanked his eighth shot, which landed to far to the right of the green. After three chips, he finally landed on the surface where he sunk a putt for a 12. Three balls in the water, a hook, a shank and three chips. The octuple bogey was just part of a very tough round:

In addition to Daly, Aaron Baddeley, Vijay Singh, Louis Oosthuizen, Webb Simpson and Jonas Blixt were among the notable players who missed the cut. Here is a complete look at the leaderboard through 36 holes.
