RBC Heritage 2014: Matt Kuchar tied for the 1st round lead

Tyler Lecka

A week after finishing fifth at the Masters, Matt Kuchar remained in good form during the first round of the RBC Heritage Open.

Despite steady, strong winds making conditions more challenging, a few players were able to post red numbers at Harbour Town Golf Links, led by Matt Kuchar. Kuchar carded a 5-under 66 on Thursday, good enough to put him in a share of the lead.

William McGirt and Scott Langley join Kuchar at 5-under, impressive showings considering much of the first round was played with winds gusting up to 20 mph. Kuchar was his typical steady self, finishing the day with five birdies and 13 pars. The first round the week after grinding out a major can sometimes lead to a bit of a letdown, but that wasn't the case with Kuchar.

"You have a couple of days to unwind after a major, and then Thursday starts, and then you've got a chance to play another PGA TOUR event," Kuchar said, via PGATour.com. "It's pretty easy to get excited for this."

He hit the ball well off the tee, finding 12 of 14 fairways. He was nearly as good from the fairways, missing just two greens. One of those two missed greens came on his final hole of the day when his approach into the par-4 found a greenside bunker. He was able to get up and down to avoid his only dropped shot of the day and close the round on a solid note.

"I hit my hybrid as good as I could," he said. "I couldn't imagine trying to hit 3‑wood in there, but it nearly was a 3‑wood in for me. To make par on 18 was a great score."

McGirt and Langley both surged into the lead by scorching the front nine. McGirt strung off four straight birdies from No. 2 to No. 5, adding another at No. 9 to make the turn in 31. Langley also shot a 31 on the front nine, but took a little more effort to get there. He birdied five of his first seven holes before dropping a shot on No. 8. A birdie at No. 9 moved him back to 5-under through the front nine. Both players shot even par on the back nine to come in at 66.

A few other notable names got off to solid starts. Harris English shot a 3-under 68 while Jordan Spieth opened the tournament with a 2-under round of 69. Defending champion Graeme McDowell didn't get off to a great start and was 3-over through 12 holes. He birdied three of his final six to shoot 71 and will open Friday at even par.

Here is a complete look at the leaderboard through 18 holes.
