2014 RBC Heritage: 2nd round suspended with K.J. Choi in the lead

Maddie Meyer

Inclement weather forced a suspension in play at Harbour Town with half the field still on the course. Play is tentatively scheduled to resume at 8 a.m. ET on Saturday, although weather will likely continue to be a factor.

Weather conditions weren't ideal on Thursday for the RBC Heritage Open, but things got even worse on Friday. Heavy rains poured down for much of the day, with conditions becoming so sloppy that officials were forced to suspend play with half the field yet to complete the round. Slugger White, PGA Tour Vice President of Rules & Competition, said the plan is to attempt to resume play Saturday morning.

"We're done for the day," White said, via PGATour.com. "We can't play anymore. It's pretty bad out there right now. We have a little drying trend between 4 a.m. and 2 p.m. if all goes well. We probably have about four hours left of golf (to finish Round 2) and if we can start tomorrow at 8 a.m., we'll try to turn it around and get the third round in and get back on track Sunday somewhere."

Rain poured for much of the day, eventually forcing play to stop with 65 of the 130-player field still on the course. Those who went off in the morning wave had an advantage of playing in slightly more favorable conditions and will also not have to play extended rounds on Saturday. K.J. Choi was among the early wave and he took advantage by carding a 4-under 67, the best round of the day. At 5-under, Choi sits on top of the leaderboard heading into Saturday, one stroke ahead of Robert Allenby. Allenby only got five holes in on Friday, but managed to record a pair of birdies. Of the 65 players who completed their second rounds, only eight shot under par.

Several players had major issues in the rain and wind, including Matt Kuchar. The first-round leader, Kuchar recorded two double bogeys in his first six holes and is now 1-under with 12 holes still to play in the second round. Jordan Spieth also had some issues, following a 69 on Thursday with a 74 on Friday. While he's 1-over, he figures to be around for the weekend with the current projected cut at 3-over. Defending champion Graeme McDowell also figures to be in the mix over the weekend. He played six holes at 2-under and is 2-under for the tournament.

Here is a look at where things stand on the leaderboard.
