Shell Houston Open purse: Matt Jones cashes career paycheck, clinches Masters spot

Scott Halleran

The Houston Open took a ridiculous turn in the final hour with Matt Kuchar squandering a big lead, and Matt Jones chipping in for the biggest moment of his career to date.

Matt Jones did not only earn his first ever Masters berth on Sunday with a thrilling chip-in playoff victory at the Shell Houston Open, but he also walked away with a career payday. Jones, a 33-year-old Australian, will cash a $1,152,000 winner's check that should help with the last-minute travel changes he must now make for Augusta.

Before today, Jones had career earnings of $7.413M and just two major championship appearances, the 2009 U.S. Open and last year's PGA Championship. Now he's got his first million dollar payday and his first invite from the green jackets at Augusta National. He had made $453k on the season so far, so Sunday's win is a life-changing moment in multiple ways.

Matt Kuchar, the man who gave away a four-shot lead (and six-shots over Jones) on Sunday, adds another $691, 200 to his coffers. Kuchar is one of the most consistent players in the world, and cashes large six-figure checks on almost a weekly basis. But his two terrible approach shots on the 18th, the first a pull into the water in regulation and the second a push into a bunker in the playoff, will shake his recent peaking trend heading into the Masters. He's now closing in on $30 million in career earnings with today's boost, but that first major title still eludes him.

Here's the full payout breakdown from the Shell Houston Open's $6.4 million purse:
