Wells Fargo Championship 2014: Angel Cabrera leads, Phil Mickelson 1 back

Tyler Lecka

The theory that Angel Cabrera only plays well in majors wasn't true on Thursday as he jumped into the lead at the Wells Fargo Championship.

The first round of the Wells Fargo Championship is in the books and there is a familiar face on top of the leaderboard, even if it's an unusual one for a non-major championship. Angel Cabrera developed a reputation for playing well in the majors, but not being much of a factor the rest of the year. While that could still prove to be true, he's off to a good start in a non-major after opening with a 6-under round of 66.

Cabrera has four career top-three finishes in the Unites States, three of which have come in major tournaments. The only two PGA Tour wins of his career came in majors. Despite having the game to win the biggest tournaments, he hasn't fared very well in non-majors, making just two cuts in seven events this year. Cabrera appeared to be in major form at Quail Hollow, carding seven birdies, including three straight after making the turn. The impressive first round was enough to put him in the lead, but only by a stroke.

Phil Mickelson and Martin Flores are tied for second place at 5-under. Mickelson got off to a quick start with two birdies in his first three holes. He tied Cabrera following a birdie at No. 12. Mickelson hit an errant shot of the tee on the 12th, but made up for it with a great approach shot, setting a kick in birdie to tie the lead.

The tie didn't last long, as he gave the stroke right back at No. 13. He again tied Cabrera for the lead again with a birdie at the 15th, only to drop a shot at No. 17 to fall back into a tie for second place.

Mickelson and Cabrera were only two of a host of players off to a good start. Webb Simpson  is 4-under while Martin Kaymer, Vijay Singh, Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose are among several players tied for seventh place at 3-under. The Tour has been a bit lackluster in recent weeks, so the potential for a star-studded weekend leaderboard is promising.

Here is a complete look at the leaderboard following 18 holes.
