Crowne Plaza Invitational leaderboard: Brice Garnett leads; Rickie Fowler misses the cut

Kevin C. Cox

Rickie Fowler is the face at Colonial with his Crowne Plaza sponsorship, but he won't be around for the weekend after a rough two rounds.

After shooting an opening-round 80, Rickie Fowler was highly unlikely to be around for the weekend at the Crowne Plaza Invitational, the title event of one of his biggest sponsors. Fowler would have needed to go extremely low to even threaten the cut line. Instead, he had more issues and finished at 15-over and in second-to-last place. Fowler finished Friday 22 strokes off the 36-hole lead, which is held by Brice Garnett.

Garnett opened his round with an eagle at the first hole, and while he bogeyed No. 3, it proved to be his only dropped shot of the day. He added three birdies to shoot a 4-under 66 and move to the top of the leaderboard at 7-under. Dustin Johnson held the lead at 5-under to open the day, but was unable to gain any more ground. After not carding a bogey in the first round, Johnson was up-and-down on Friday with three bogeys and three birdies on his way to an even-par round of 70. He'll head to the weekend tied for fourth place. The top 10 is filled with several notable names, including Jason Dufner, Jordan Spieth and Harris English. All three are tied for 10th place at 4-under. Brandt Snedeker is also tied for 10th, and Hunter Mahan is tied for 17th at 3-under.

Adam Scott, playing in his second round as the No. 1 player in the world, turned in a solid back nine to shoot a 68. He birdied three holes on the back side, including No. 18, to move to 1-under for the tournament. While Scott is currently the top-ranked player in the world, he'll need a strong weekend to stay there. Current No. 3 Henrik Stenson would overtake No. 1 if he finishes higher in the BMW PGA Championship than Scott finishes at Colonial. Stenson is currently tied for fifth place in the European Tour event. Scott is tied for 36th.

Matt Kuchar also had a chance to move up in the world rankings with a strong week. It won't happen, however, after Kuchar finished 2-over and missed the cut. Wes Roach also missed the cut, despite opening the tournament with a 67. He shot a 78 on Friday to finish at 5-over.

Here is a complete look at the leaderboard heading into the weekend:
