2014 Memorial golf tournament: Tee times, pairings for Friday's round

Joe Maiorana-USA TODAY Sports

Rory McIlroy and Bubba Watson set up as the top two contenders early at the Memorial, and they'll play on opposite sides of the draw on Friday at Muirfield Village.

Five-time winner Tiger Woods may not be in Columbus this week, but his Nike stablemate, and the game's best hope as its next dominant player, is sitting comfortably in front after 18 holes at the Memorial. Rory McIlroy continued his roll from Sunday over in England, opening at Muirfield Village with a 9-under 63 to take an early three-shot lead.

Rory should have a couple wins already this year, but Sunday's victory at the BMW PGA Championship, the Euro Tour's flagship event, was his first. He started Sunday seven shots back of the lead, and that closing round combined with his start at Memorial puts him an astounding 15-under through his last 36 holes. That number comes on two of the top venues on each respective tour, Wentworth, where he'd never played well, and Jack Nicklaus' design masterpiece.

McIlroy has held a first round lead eight times during his PGA Tour career, including here in 2011 (an eventual 5th place result). But this is not a co-lead or a one-shot margin on a bunched-up leaderboard. Rory blew away the rest of the field to go to sleep on a three-shot lead, the largest at this event since 2009. Amazingly, the 63 came with a messy double bogey on the card -- had he avoided that trouble at the 14th, he may have challenged John Huston's opening round record of 11-under 61 back in 1996. Even with that blip, the Ulsterman will be out in the early wave on Friday and have a great opportunity to build on that margin with all three players in second not going out until the afternoon. The scoring conditions were slightly better for the morning wave on Thursday, and that's generally how it goes. McIlroy is due on the tenth tee at 8:26 a.m. ET, playing in that loaded grouping with local Jason Day and world No. 1 Adam Scott.

On the afternoon side, it's Bubba Watson who will anchor things and likely lead the TV coverage, set to come on the air at 2:30 p.m. ET. Muirfield Village is the kind of course that Bubba should eat up. He once again leads the Tour in driving distance, and this is a setup that generally favors the bombers and is characteristically forgiving to wayward tee shots. But he's never finished inside the top 20 here in eight previous appearances.

Along with those bombs off the tee, Bubba is also rolling in the lengthier putts up on the green. He leads the Tour in conversions from 15 to 25 feet, an area where he was below average last season. We can always count on Bubba to overwhelm courses with his length and shotmaking abilities, but the steadier putting is a huge reason why he's been the best golfer in the world since January. Despite that mediocre track record here, he's one of three in second-place at 6-under and he continues to keep it rolling in advance of the season's second major. Bubba will be out with Keegan Bradley and Jim Furyk, two more top Ryder Cup prospects, at 1:05 p.m.
