Neumann-Goretti of Philadelphia (27-4) defeated Mountour of Pittsburgh (25-8), in a relatively low scoring 55-45 decision Friday night at the Bryce Jordan Center in University Park to win the Pennsylvania Class 3A championship.
The title was Neumann-Goretti's second in a row and denied Montour a victory in its first trip to a state final.
Neumann-Goretti's frenetic pace forced 15 turnovers, including 11 steals. Montour struggled from behind the 3-point arc, making only hitting six of 23 attempts.
Montour held Neumann-Goretti star point guard and St. Peter's commit Lamin Fulton to only seven points on 3-of-13 shooting but was unable to contain Ja'Quan Newton, who scored 17 points and had eight rebounds to lead Neumann-Goretti. Derrick Steward added a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. John Davis also had a strong game with 12 points and seven boards.
Montour's lone scorer in double figures was Dillon Buechel, who had 17 points, nine on 3-pointers. Star Devin Wilson was held to only four points, but did grab 10 boards.
