Star Trek invades the 1981 All-Star Game

With Star Trek Into Darkness wrapping up a blockbuster opening weekend today behind Chris Pine's Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto's Mr. Spock, and Benedict Cumberbatch's Whoever-the-hell-he-is, it's time for a quick reminder of what the franchise was in July 1981.

One word: filler.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture had done poorly at the box office only two years before and, while a script for what would eventually become Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan was actively being worked on, it was still months away from being filmed. In the meantime, the only true taste of Star Trek was the outro music for NBC Sports, as seen in this throwaway to commercial in the middle of the first inning of the 1981 All-Star Game.

Oh, Star Trek, you've come a long way!
