Denard Span doing Denard Span things

Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

Remember when everybody was saying Denard Span was one of the reasons the Nationals were so disappointing?

Well, that was true. He was one of the reasons. One of the bigger reasons, actually, somewhere just behind Danny Espinosa's and Jayson Werth's injuries. No more, though. Thursday, Span made this circus catch ...

... and he also ran his hitting streak to 23 games. Span's batting line still isn't anything special ... but it's right in line with his career. In his career, Span's been roughly a league-average hitter, and this season he's been roughly a league-average hitter, give or take a few seeing-eye grounders here or there.

All things considered, Span's essentially been the players the Nationals should have figured on getting. And the only odd thing about his career is that he's done his best hitting when he was 24 and 25, rather than two or three years later. He's a good player, and should be roughly as good next season. After which, he'll begin to fall into the fourth-outfielder category. Fortunately for the Nationals, Span's contract expires after next season.
