MVP droughts, N.L. edition

Dilip Vishwanat

With everyone and their brother picking Andrew McCutchen to be Pittsburgh's first Most Valuable Player since the George H.W. Bush administration, I thought it'd be fun to look at which teams have toiled the longest without one of their players winning the big one. Today we'll look at the National League.

Team Last MVP Player Notes
Giants 2012 Buster Posey Good baseball player (insight).
Brewers 2011 Ryan Braun If Brewers don't want Braundo, he can play for my team.
Reds 2010 Joey Votto Selfish, RBI-hating jerk only cares about scoring runs for his team.
Cardinals 2009 Albert Pujols Greatest first baseman since ... Jimmie Foxx?
Phillies 2007 Jimmy Rollins Classic narrative pick. Wright or Utley would've been better.
Braves 1999 Chipper Jones Edged Bagwell in stretch performance vs. rival Mets.
Cubs 1998 Sammy Sosa McGwire was better. Monstrous '01 overshadowed by Bonds.
Rockies 1997 Larry Walker Biggio or Piazza more deserving, but Walker was HOF great.
Padres 1996 Ken Caminiti Tony "Mr. Padre" Gwynn might be best player to never win MVP.
Pirates 1992 Barry Bonds Also Pittsburgh's last winning season, not coincidentally.
Dodgers 1988 Kirk Gibson Who will be the next Dodger MVP? Kemp? Puig? Kershaw?
Mets - - Case against New York bias in award voting starts here.
Nationals - - Raines jobbed in '87 by terrible Dawson pick.
Marlins - - Best season by a Marlin: Hanley in '08 or Sheffield in '96?
D'backs - - Randy Johnson probably should've won in '99 or '00.
