Cy Young droughts, A.L. edition

Rick Yeatts

This week we've been investigating how long it's been since a player from each team won the MVP and Cy Young awards. Today we're looking at the American League Cy Young winners, which have been spread fairly evenly among the various clubs for the last dozen or so years. The only exception I know is the case of the Baltimore Orioles, who haven't won a Cy since Stone Pony did it in the era when you could still buy Billy Beer. And the Rangers, of course, whose story is much too sad to be told.

Team Last Cy Player Notes
Rays 2012 David Price Not a free agent until 2016. Which is kind of messed up, but whatever.
Tigers 2011 Justin Verlander Query: "what's wrong with justin verlander ... About 30,800,000 results."
Mariners 2010 Felix Hernandez Went 13-12 for terrible team, but still won. Didn't we already #killthewin?
Royals 2009 Zach Greinke Only year he received any Cy Young votes.
Indians 2008 Cliff Lee Clevelanders are still smarting about trading Lee and Sabathia away.
Twins 2006 Johan Santana Two-time winner of the Warren Spahn award, given annually to best lefty.
Angels 2005 Bartolo Colon Has played for 7 different teams, including two different stints with ChiSox.
Astros 2004 Roger Clemens Randy Johnson had more K's, innings, fewer BB's, better ERA.
Blue Jays 2003 Roy Halladay Is also last Phillie to win Cy Young.
Athletics 2002 Barry Zito Pedro's still mad about this one. May have split vote with Derek Lowe.
Yankees 2001 Roger Clemens If not for Halladay would also be last Blue Jay to win the award.
Red Sox 2000 Pedro Martinez Best season on this list. One of the greatest pitching seasons of all time.
White Sox 1993 Jack McDowell His band once opened for The Smithereens on tour.
Orioles 1980 Steve Stone "I knew it would ruin my arm. But one year of 25-7 is worth five of 15-15."
Rangers - - Fergie Jenkins came closest, finishing 2nd in 1974.
