Scott Dixon will race from pole position for the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday. The four-time IndyCar champion set an average time of 232.164 mph, the fastest qualifying time since Arie Luyendyk set the record of 236.986 mph in 1996.
The Indy 500 will be carried by ABC, and will begin with pre-race coverage at 11 a.m. ET. The race will get underway when the green flag is waved at approximately 12:17 p.m. Online streaming of the race will be available via the WatchESPN website or app.
Dixon has won the race from pole in the past, doing so in 2008. But he’s also made pole before and didn’t win, coming in fourth in 2015. Last year’s race-winner, Alexander Rossi, started from 11th. In fact, the last five race winners started the race outside of the top 10.
Rossi is in this year’s race as well, qualifying in third on the grid. Ed Carpenter occupies the second spot. The third row includes Tony Kanaan, Marco Andretti and Will Power. The race will include several former race winners, with names like Helio Castroneves and Juan Pablo Montoya.
Dixon is vying for his second ever win in the race. He’s a four-time IndyCar champion, and has been favored for much of the pre-race buildup. But Fernando Alonso, an IndyCar rookie making his first ever start in the series, has also been favored in some books.
Alonso may be a rookie technically, but he has as much or more experience than most of the field when it comes to open-wheel racing. The two-time Formula One champion qualified in fifth on the grid, placing him in the top two rows.
James Davison will start at the back of the grid. He is replacing Sebastien Bourdais in the race. Bourdais crashed Saturday during qualifying and suffered multiple fractures in his pelvis and a fractured right hip. So Davison will race for Dale Coyne Racing on Sunday.
