Michael Phelps has competed in the last three Olympics in the 200m butterfly, and his time in the semifinals of the event at the 2012 U.S. Olympic time trials kept alive his hopes of doing it a fourth time.
Phelps didn't exactly exert himself in his attempt to qualify for a later final in the event; he didn't really try to take first in his heat from Bobby Bollier or Davis Tarwater. And it's hard to blame Phelps for that after edging Ryan Lochte in an earlier fight for a qualifying spot in the 200m free. But he did what was needed. His time of 1:56.42 was good enough for third place among competitors in the semifinal, which will put him in the eight qualifiers for the final event that will send two swimmers to London.
Phelps has already qualified for two events in London and has four more, including the 200m fly, to go.
