Kathleen Ledecky, a 15-year old from the Northern Virginia area, wasted no time making a name for herself in her first Olympic Trials, as she easily won the women's 800 meter freestyle to qualify for the Olympics.

Ledecky got out to an extremely fast start and never looked back. She led the race almost the entire way, finishing with a time of 8:19.78.

Kate Ziegler, who stayed about two lengths behind Ledecky for most of the race, finished in second with a time of 8:21.87; the next closest swimmer, Haley Anderson, finished almost five seconds behind Ziegler at 8:26.60. Ziegler is making her second consecutive trip to the Olympics.
