Monday night, youth was served in the fastest event in women's swimming. Jessica Hardy, 25, took first in the women's 50-meter freestyle at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha, in a time of 24.50 seconds.

Hardy was followed by Kara Lynn Joyce, who finished second at 24.73 seconds, and also qualified for the U.S. Olympic team in the event.

But the story of the event was Dara Torres' attempt to make a sixth Olympic team at the age of 45, and the 12-time Olympic medalist nearly pulled it off. Torres finished fourth, at 24.82 seconds, just .09 seconds off of Joyce's pace, and will not be headed to the 2012 London Olympics. Her bid to swim in the red, white and blue ended 28 years after first doing so in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
