South Korea’s Dae-Nam Song won the gold medal in men’s middleweight judo defeating Asley Gonzalez of Cuba in the finals.
South Korea’s Dae-Nam Song won the gold medal in men’s middleweight judo (90 kg – approximately 198 lbs) defeating Asley Gonzalez of Cuba in the finals.
Song, who finished only 17th in the world championships last year, was a surprise gold medalist in London. The final went into golden score extra time before Song finally scored a waza-ari. This is South Korea’s second gold and third medal overall in judo at these Olympics.
The event favorite, Greece’s Iliadis Ilias, reigning world champion and a gold medalist at Athens in 2004, won one of the bronze medals by beating Brazilian Tiago Camilo. The other bronze medal was won by another favorite, Japan’s Masashi Nishiyama who defeated Russian Kirill Denisov in his bronze medal match. Japan continues to hold the medal lead in Judo with six to France’s five.
