Rebecca Soni went 2:20.00 in the women's 200-meter breaststroke semifinal Wednesday at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, setting a world record by .12 seconds. Soni couldn't quite break the 2:20 barrier, but she'll get another shot at it in the final Thursday at 2:40 p.m. ET.
Soni broke the record set by Annamay Pierse of Canada in 2009. Soni had previously held the record after swimming the event in 2:20.22 at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. In London, she led after every turn of the race and posted a sub 36-second split in the second leg.
Satomi Suzuki finished second in the semi at 2.40 seconds behind Soni. Rikke Pedersen of Denmark posted the fastest time in the first semifinal at 2:22.23. Suffice it to say Soni will be among the favorites for a gold medal.
