The United States' Jacob Varner beat Valerii Andriitsev of the Ukraine, 3-0, in two periods to win the men's 96 kg freestyle wrestling gold medal match Sunday at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. Varner took each of the first two periods 1-0, scoring on minimum-scoring throws. The 26-year-old former Iowa State Cyclone came into the Olympics as one of the favorites after taking bronze at the 2012 World Championships.
Preceding the bout, George Gogshelidze of Georgia defeated Kurban Kurbanov of Uzbekistan, 3-1, in the bronze medal match. The medal was the seventh for Georgia at the London Games.
In the men's 66 kg division, Japan's Tatsuhiro Yonemitsu defeated Sushil Kumar of India for the gold medal. The event was embroiled in some controversy earlier in the day when two Egyptian wrestlers were forced to forfeit their matches after showing up late at the arena.
