Korea's Hak Seon Yang Wins Gold In Men's Vault

Stay connected with SB Nation

American Sam Mikulak fell short of medaling in the men’s vault on Monday, finishing in fifth place. South Korea’s Hak Seon Yang won the gold as expected and was very impressive in doing so. His first vault had a difficulty rating of 7.4, two tenths of a point higher than any other competitor and considered the most difficult vault ever attempted. His second vault was a bit easier (7.0 difficulty -- still quite hard), but he scored even higher as he absolutely drilled it, scoring a 9.6 on his execution (for a 16.6 overall).

Mikulak, who broke both his legs during a meet last year, recovered in time to be able to do this at the Olympics this year, which is impressive in its own right.

Russia’s Denis Ablyazin took home the silver and Igor Radivilov of Ukraine claimed the bronze.
