The Commonwealth Games-- the basis for them, not the games themselves-- are pretty strange. It's basically England being like "remember when we ruled over ALL OF YOU? Great! Let's play squash!" In its own way, this record-breaking cocktail featuring an ingredient representing each of the 71 participating Commonwealth nations is a symbol of the scope of the former British Empire. Here are the ingredients from Oceania alone:
Australia: aniseed myrtle (syzygium anisatum) (gundabluie) (bardi bush)
Cook Islands: custard apple seeds (annona reticulata)
Kiribati: dried coconut meat (copra)
Nauru: pumpkin seeds
New Zealand: manuka honey
Niue: paw paw
Norfolk Island: yam
Papua New Guinea: taro (colocasia esculenta)
Samoa: ladies finger (small, sweet banana)
Solomon Islands: taro leaves
Tonga: avocado (avoka)
Tuvalu: breadfruit
Vanuatu: plantain
Fiji: kava root
The full list can be found at The Drinks Business, where the creator is quoted saying the cocktail "tastes great." Unless the whole thing is massively watered or sugared down, this is hard to believe, but I'm happy to accept a sample to confirm.
