Mets To Interview Bob Melvin, Others In Manager Search

Stay connected with SB Nation

The Mets' first order of business this offseason was to find a replacement for general manager Omar Minaya, which they were able to do when they brought in Sandy Alderson.

Their second order of business this offseason is to find a replacement for manager Jerry Manuel. They wanted to find a GM so he could hire his own choice, and now Alderson is preparing his interview list.

The first two people to interview will be Bob Melvin and Dave Jauss. Melvin has experience managing the Mariners and Diamondbacks, and last year served as a scout. Jauss, meanwhile, was most recently the Mets' bench coach, and hasn't gotten much notice. He does have managerial experience in the minors.

Alderson is also planning to meet with Chip Hale and probably Wally Backman. Hale was most recently the team's third base coach, while Backman manages the Brooklyn Cyclones, a minor league affiliate. And just to add more names to the pile, there's AAA manager Ken Oberkfell, AA manager Tim Teufel, and minor league field coordinator Terry Collins.

All seven of these people are internal candidates. Alderson is expected to interview candidates from outside the organization beginning next week.
