Updating a previous item, the MLB Winter Meetings are indeed off to a fast start, as the first official trade of the meetings has been pulled off. Nick Piecoro confirms that the Diamondbacks will send third baseman Mark Reynolds to the Orioles in exchange for young righties David Hernandez and Kam Mickolio.
Reynolds will give the Orioles the third baseman they've been seeking, and while he strikes out a ton and isn't known for his athleticism or range in the field, he can draw a walk and can clear the bases at the drop of a hat. He's set to earn $5 million in 2011 and $7.5 million in 2012, and has a $11 million club option for 2013.
Hernandez and Mickolio, meanwhile, bring some much-needed talented arms to a desperate Arizona staff. Both of them are able to ramp their fastballs up to the 97-98mph range, and Hernandez works with a good curve, while Mickolio owns a sharp slider.
The only remaining hurdle are the standard physical exams for each player, which shouldn't be a problem.
