Ronny Paulino Signs One-Year Contract With Mets

The Mets haven't had the busiest of offseasons so far, but they made a pair of moves on Tuesday. They signed D.J. Carrasco to a two-year deal to shore up the bullpen, and, on top of that, they signed catcher Ronny Paulino to a one-year contract to address the bench.

Paulino's contract will be worth $1.3 million, and is pending a physical exam, which should take place soon. Paulino is being brought in to serve as the backup to Josh Thole, their promising young starter.

Paulino is 29 years old, and was recently non-tendered by the Marlins. He batted .259 a year ago and has a lifetime average of .273, with limited power and a decent arm. He seemed to break through a bit in 2009, but regressed in 2010 before ending the year serving a 50-game suspension, of which a handful of games still remain to serve to begin 2011.
