Dusty Baker Given Lovely Parting Gifts As Cubs Manager

Dusty Baker should have saved this story, about the end of his tenure as Cubs manager in 2006, for his memoirs. Via Jon Paul Morosi:

"At the very end, somebody took a dump right where I stood in the dugout every day," Baker said Monday morning. "That was the low point. The grounds crew guy cleaned it up. He said, ‘Oh, I think it’s dog crap.’ I said, ‘No it ain’t. That’s human crap."↵

Baker said Monday’s interview was the first time he had discussed the incident publicly. He doesn’t know who the perpetrator was.

We can take some guesses, though, can't we?

Actually, I won't. I just don't know enough about that team. We do know it wasn't Greg Maddux or Neifi Perez, as both were sent to other clubs well before season's end. This does speak to why some managers, however talented, eventually have to leave. Lose enough games -- the Cubs lost 96 that season -- and you can lose your team.
