Kendrys Morales To Have Second Surgery, Out Until 2012

Los Angeles Angels first baseman Kendrys Morales broke his ankle celebrating a home run last season, a freakish and unfortunate injury. The news just keeps getting worse, though. From Scott Miller of CBS Sports:

Kendrys Morales done for the year. Will have a second surgery.

For some reason, this seems like one of the worst baseball stories in recent memory. Morales didn't attempt an Ozzie Smith-style back flip. He didn't roundhouse kick a water cooler after getting called out on strikes. He just ... jumped. He was happy. His teammates were happy. And he jumped. It was already a terrible story when he missed the rest of 2010. But to cost him 2011 too, in the prime of his career, right after he had his breakout season? Words fail.

The surgery will clean up scar tissue and bone cysts, and the recovery time is usually six months.

If there's good news for the first-place Angels, it's that replacement Mark Trumbo is doing okay. His on-base percentage isn't good at .311, but he's partially made up for that with his six home runs and .486 slugging percentage. Though Trumbo had a breakout season in Triple-A last year, he's a career .275/.330/.474 hitter in the minor leagues. There's a pretty good chance that the Angels will feel even worse about the Morales injury after the league adjusts to Trumbo.

Kendrys Morales Shut Down With Foot Soreness

Last season, of course, Angels first baseman Kendrys Morales famously broke his leg during a celebration at home plate. The injury knocked him out for the remainder of the year, dealing a significant blow to the Angels' lineup.

Morales came into 2011 looking to recover and get healthy in time for Opening Day. Mike Scioscia initially thought that Morales' odds of making the opener were good. However, Morales hasn't been running as well as expected, as he hasn't yet been able to go full speed in a straight line, and he also hasn't been able to cut or curve due to pain in his left foot. And now, only making matters worse, that pain has caused the team to shut him down:

#Angels 1B Kendrys Morales shut down b/c of soreness in ball of L foot, another setback in return from broken leg. Was in LA Mon to see dr.

It's safe to say that Morales is going to begin the season on the disabled list. Mark Trumbo will fill in at first base for however long Morales is out of action, and that could be quite a while yet, as he needs to be able to run without any problem before the Angels place him on the active roster.
